The 90 meter long, 1652 dwt cargo vessel Rigel A sank in the Gulf of Aden off Al Mukalla, Yemen. The Rigel A had been at anchor off Al Mukalla with 1700 tons of food cargo awaiting to berth at a terminal when it suffered a two meter long crack in the hull in the engine room. The sudden flooding was too much for vessel’s pumps to keep up. The eight crew on board were forced to abandoned ship into a life raft while the Rigel A slowly submerged. The Coastguard arrived a short time later and rescued all the crew. No reports of injuries. Within a few hours, the Rigel A completely disappeared from the surface and sank.

On August 13, the 184 meter long container ship MSC Elsa 3 allided with the bulk carrier Katina near Hodeidah, Yemen. The MSC Elsa 3 was attempting to manuever to leave the anchorage when it struck the Katina. The Katina was undamaged, but the MSC Elsa 3 had sustained damage in its forecastle. The boxship returned to port and was inspected before allowed to continue on its voyage to Salaiah. No reports of injuries or pollution released.
