The 60 meter long, 249 dwt  ro-ro passenger ferry Danica Joy 2 capsized and sank at its berth in Zamboanga, Philippines. The ferry had arrived from Sandakan with 799 passengers and cargo including food items and dry goods. All the 799 passengers disembarked and the crew began offloading cargo along the port side of the vessel. Unfortunately, the crew had not ballast the vessel during the unloading process. The Danica Joy 2 lost stability and rolled over onto her starboard side partially sinking. No reports of injuries to the crew on board at the time of the incident. Authorities placed booms around the vessel to contain any pollution released.

The passenger ship Jadestar went aground off Basilian near Tabiawan, Philippines.  The Jadestar was en route to Zamboanga with 63 passengers and crew when it grounded in shallow water only a hundred meters off shore.  The vessel requested assistance from the Philippine authorities who dispatched small military boats to the scene.  The boats were able to bring passengers and cargo ashore.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution.  Reports state there was some panic among the passengers when the vessel’s engines stopped and conditions worsened.

The ro-ro ferry Zamboanga went aground near Dumaguete City, Philippines.   The Zamboanga was approaching the port when its engine failed.   The vessel was pushed into shallow waters by the strong winds and choppy seas of a tropical depression.   The Coast Guard were quickly alerted and sent personnel to the scene.   The Coast Guardsmen rigged lines to the liferafts and safely landed all 228 passengers on board.  Authorities suspended vessel operations  in the areas affected by the tropical depression.
