On the morning of January 5, a fishing vessel (name not disclosed) had capsized in the Qiongzhou Strait off  Xuwen, Zhanjiang, China. The fishing vessel had rolled over with 6 crew on board. Nearby fishing vessels would arrive on site and find 5 of the crew holding onto the overturn hull.  One crew member was missing, but was later found to have perished during the incident. His body would be later be recovered.

The cause of the capsizing is not yet known.  Authorities stated the incident was being investigated by local maritime authorities.

The 53 meter long cargo vessel Yuan Da 668 sank in the South China Sea near Zhanjiang, China. The Yuan Da 668 had been at anchor when Typhoon Mujigae approached with high winds and large waves. The vessel’s anchor began to drag and the Yuan Da 668 was blown aground.  The waves pounded against the cargo vessel causing water ingress.  The seven crew on board decided to abandon ship and attempt to swim ashore.  Six crew reached shore safely, but one crewman perished. No further details reported.

The 90 meter long, 4577 dwt tanker Run Guang 9 caught fire and exploded off Zhanjiang, China. The Run Guang 9 was en route to Zhanjiang from Zhuhai in ballast when one of the tanks caught fire and exploded.  Twelve of the 14 crew on board were rescued with 3 sustaining injuries.   Zhanjiang authorities were able to extinguish the blaze on the run Guang 9 and take control of the vessel. Two crew members were reported as missing and rescuers were still searching the vessel and the nearby area.
