Fire off Newfoundland
A fishing vessel based out of Englee caught fire while off St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada. The vessel with 5 men on board sent out a distress signal. A nearby vessel reached the scene and pulled four crewmen, all in lifesuits, out of the water. A Coast Guard helicopter also reached the scene and pulled the last crewman out of the water, but he only had a life-jacket. He was non-responsive and later pronounced dead. The four survivors were taken to Lewisporte and later to hospital. Canada authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident.
Fire on Caria
The 67 meter long, 995 dwt tanker Caria suffered a fire while berthed at Zaandam, Netherlands. The fire broke out in the generator and the master of the vessel requested assistance. However, the Caria was berthed where local firemen could not reach from the shore. A fire fighting boat was called out and the fire was extinguished shortly after. No one was injured in the incident.
