Karin Schepers Aground

Karin Schepers Aground

The 141 meter long,  9000 ton boxship Karin Schepers went aground on Cape Cornwall, United Kingdom.   The boxship was bound for Rotterdam from Cork, Ireland went it struck the sandbank.   Reports state the vessel received assistance from the RNLI, local police and the Coast Guard, but no distress signal was sent out.   A helicopter lowered a man to the vessel to determine the condition of the vessel and crew.   All 13 men on board were uninjured and the vessel was seaworthy.   The Karin Schepers was able to release itself by shifting ballast and using the rising tide.   Surveyors were dispatched to meet with the vessel as it continued on to Rotterdam.   No reports of pollution being released.

An initial investigation has stated the Coast Guard had attempted to contact the Karin Schepers before the grounding.   The boxship had been spotted not using the correct traffic lane.  Reports state the Coast Guard was unable to establish communication with the boxship before it went aground.

Fire on the Alma Zevenaar

Fire on the Alma Zevenaar

The 86 meter long, 1888 ton self-propelled barge Alma Zevenaar suffered an engine fire while on the Rhine River near Tolkamer, Netherlands.   The Alma was proceeding to a shipyard after an incident the week before when the fire broke out.   The vessel headed for a nearby quay where local firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.   Reports state the fire destroyed the wheelhouse, but the living quarters were saved.   Damage to the engine room was not reported.   All on board the Alma were uninjured.   The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Sea Hawk Disabled

Sea Hawk Disabled

The 87 meter long, 3015 dwt freighter Sea Hawk became disabled near Flushing, Netherlands.   The Sea Hawk was proceeding to Lowestoft when it suffered a machine breakdown.  The vessel Union 6 spotted the disabled Sea Hawk and took it under tow.   A few hours later the crew of the Sea Hawk finish repairs and the freighter continued under its own power.   No reports of injury or pollution being released.
