Johan Hjort

The 65 meter long, 835 dwt research vessel Johan Hjort became disabled off Alden Island near Askvoll, Norway.  The vessel suffered a complete power outage when the engines failed.   The Johan Hjort was in danger of going ashore when the crew was able to drop anchor just 250 meters off shore.  Authorities immediately deployed two Norwegian naval vessels to the scene.  The frigate Thor Heyerdahl took the Johan Hjort under tow to Bergen, Norway.  There were no injuries of the 25 crew on board.

Collision off Qingdao

Collision off Qingdao

The 336 meter long, 98849 dwt container ship Hamburg Bridge collided with the 93 meter long, 4424 dwt freighter Oriental Sunrise near Qingdao, China.  The Hamburg Bridge sliced into the Oriental Sunrise which quickly filled with water and sank.  Of the 19 crew on board, nine were rescued with the remainder reported as missing.  Three crewmen were severely injured and taken to hospital.  Reports state one crewman later died while the others were in critical condition.  Authorities dispatched 13 vessels to the scene looking for any other survivors.  The cause of the collision has not been released.  Authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident.

Second Grounding off Tauranga

The 133 meter long, 8015 dwt container ship Schelde Trader went aground near the entrance to Tauranga, New Zealand.  The Schelde Trader was departing Tauranga when it suffered a power failure and lost steering.  The current then carried the disabled vessel onto the rocks.   Reports state the damage was slight and the vessel was refloated and taken back to harbour by the tug Te Matua.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released. The Schelde Trader will be inspected and officials have stated there will be an investigation into the incident.   The Schelde Trader had stopped in Tauranga to refuel and was headed to Noumea, New Caledonia.   The grounding of the Schelde Trader is less than a month after the container ship Rena hit the Astrolabe Reef off the Tauranga coast.
