The 50 meter long self-propelled barge Patmar Z capsized on the Leuvense Vaart at Wilsele, Belgium.  The Patmar Z was berthed at a quay unloading a cargo of stones when the cargo shifted to port.   Part of the cargo of stone fell onto the quay while the vessel listed over to port pinned against the quay.    One crewman was injured when the cargo fell onto the quay.   Reports state some of the diesel fuel on board spilled from a tank into the water.  A boom was placed around the vessel to contain any further pollution released.  Authorities plan to pump water into the starboard side of the hold to stabilize the vessel.   If this does not work, air will be pumped under the Patmar Z to right the vessel.

The 98 meter long self-propelled tanker Synthese 3 went aground on the Rhine River near Oberwesel, Germany.  The tanker was carrying 1300 tons of sulphuric acid from Ludwigshafen  bound for Antwerp, Belgium when the tanker went off course and ran aground.   No reports of injuries, but traffic on the river near the scene was suspended.  The Synthese 3  had a double-hull and no pollution or cargo was released.  The tanker Synthese 15 was brought to the scene and unloaded some 240 tons off the Synthese 3 before it could be refloated.  The vessel was refloated a few hours later and proceeded to Duisburg for inspection.  The water police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
