The 111 meter long passenger ship Regina Rheni caught fire during the night on the Rhine river near Dusseldorf, Germany.  The fire started in the kitchen and quickly filling the vessel with dense smoke.   The crew closed the hatches to contain the blaze while moving passengers to the outer deck.   The fire damaged the electrical leaving everyone in the dark.  The Regina Rheni’s 102 passengers and 32 crew were safely evacuated  by the assistance of rescue boats from Dusseldorf.  Local firefighters boarded the vessel and the blaze was extinguished a few hours later.  Ten passengers were injured and were treated for smoke inhalation.   The Regina Rheni was en route to Arnhem on a schedule cruise.   The water police has launched an investigation into the incident.

Yaakob II

Yaakob II

The 76 meter long, 1484 dwt freighter went aground off Leipsoi Island near Leros, Greece.   The Yaakob II hull was damaged suffering water ingress.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.   A tug was requested and was reported on scene.  The Yaakob II was en route to Latakia, Syria from Aliaga, Turkey with 1500 tons of steel.

The 46 foot long fishing vessel Sherry Ann went ashore at Squibnocket Beach in Chilmark, Massachusetts.   None of the three crew on board were injured.  The vessel contacted the coast guard who launched a helicopter to the scene to monitor the vessel for any pollution.  Reports state the Sherry Ann had some 800 gallons of fuel on board.   A commercial salvage company will handle the refloating of the vessel.
