CT Longford

CT Longford

The 117 meter long, 10303 dwt tanker CT Longford allided with the pier at Brunsbüttel, Germany.   The tanker had locked into the Kiel Canal with 8000 tons of ethanol cargo when it suddenly veered off course striking the pier.   The pier sustained damage with portions of the pilings left submerged while the CT Longford suffered damage to its bow.   No reports of injuries and no pollution was released.  The tanker berthed nearby to allow divers to inspect the hull.   The water police have launched an investigation into the incident.  Reports state the cause of the accident may have been a control malfunction.

Bahuga Jaya

The 765 dwt ro-ro ferry Bahuga Jaya was in collision with the 110 meter long, 10003 dwt LNG tanker Norgas Cathinka in the Sunda Strait near Bakauheni, Lampung, Indonesia.  The ferry had more than 210 passengers and 78 vehicles on board when the tanker collided with the ferry leaving a large hole in the hull.   The crew was able to send out a distress call before the ferry flooded, but the passengers and crew were forced to jump overboard most without life jackets.   It took less than 20 minutes before the ferry capsized and sank.  Ten merchant vessels and local vessels rushed to the aid and rescued over 200 passengers and crew clinging to debris from the water.   Along with survivors, eight bodies were also recovered.   Reports state the death toll may rise to more than 40 as some passengers may have been trapped in their vehicles when the Bahuga Jaya sank.  More than 80 survivors were sent to hospital from injuries sustained in the incident.  No injuries or damage reported on the tanker.  The Bahuga Jaya regularly sailed between ports between Java and Sumatra.

The 100 meter long, 8874 dwt container ship Everton caught fire in the Mozambique Channel near Sofala, Mozambique.   The fire started in the engine room and quickly consumed the vessel’s superstructure including the bridge.   The fire disabled the Everton, but the 12 crew on board were safely evacuated.   Three tugs were dispatched to the scene and took the vessel under tow.   The Everton was en route to Pemba, Mozambique, to Mitsamudu, Comoros.
