Fajar Samudera

The 471 dwt passenger ro-ro ferry  Fajar Samudera sank while at anchorage off Port Klang, Malaysia.  The  Fajar Samudera had been detained by court order for over three years when it sank.   No reports of injuries.   The vessel rests in 12 meters of water and is partially visible at low tide.  A light sheen of oil has appeared around the wreck.  The pollution is suspected to come from the engine room bilge.   Authorities have surveyed the wreck and placed a buoy to warn vessels.   Reports state the sinking was likely due to a leak in the hull due to the lack of maintenance during the last three years.

Kemira Gas

The 142 meter long, 9965 dwt tanker Kemira Gas went aground in the Kiel Canal near Schwartenbek, Germany.  The Kemira Gas was in ballast when strong wind gusts pushed the vessel into pilings as it was waiting to allow another vessel pass.   The crew attempted to prevent the grounding by an emergency anchoring, but the vessel veered perpendicular to the canal and went aground onto the embankment.  No reports of injuries.   The Kemira Gas was refloated a short time later and proceeded to Brunsbüttel for inspection.  The Kemira Gas was en route to London from Rostock.

A coal barge went aground on the Monongahela River near Brownsville, Pennsylvania pushed by the towboat Francis J. Blank.   The Francis J. Blank was proceeding down river with three barges when one struck bottom and began to leak.  The towboat pushed the leaking barge onto the river bank to prevent it from it sinking.  River traffic was halted while another barge was brought to the scene to lighter the coal.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
