Volzhskiy 45

The 139 meter long, 6003 dwt freighter Volzhskiy 45 went aground on the Don River near Rostov-on-Don, Russia.  The vessel left Rostov-on-Don with 5000 tons of corn bound for Turkey when it went hard aground.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.  Reports state that a salvage plan has been submitted and the vessel will be refloated.

The 245 meter long, 45362 dwt container ship Norfolk Express went aground in the Weser estuary near Wremen, Germany.   The container ship had veered out of the fairway at high speed and had grounded with it’s bow stuck on a dam.  No report of injuries or pollution released.   The bow of the vessel had sustained some damage in the grounding.   Multiple tugs were dispatched to the scene while authorities had anti-pollution ships monitoring the situation.   The Norfolk Express was pulled free on the first attempt on the rising tide.  The vessels proceeded to Bremerhaven for inspection.

Kai Xin

The 105 meter long, 1810 dwt fishing vessel Kai Xin caught fire off the coast of Antarctica.  The crew sent out distress call requesting assistance.   The fishing vessel Juvel was nearby and responded to the scene.  The Juvel was able to safely rescue 90 crewmen from the Kai Xin.  The Chilean Navy has dispatched a tug to the scene to take the Kai Xin under tow.  The tug has anti-pollution equipment on board in case the Kai Xin releases any fuel into the water.
