The 208 meter long, 4915 dwt passenger cruise ship Zenith caught fire near Venice, Italy.  The fire started in the vessel’s engine room while the cruise ship was en route to Venice from Ravenna with 1672 passengers on board.  The crew was able to extinguish the blaze, but the fire had damaged the main engine disabling the ship.   The Zenith dropped anchor until it could be towed to Venice.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.  Reports state the repairs to the engine would be completed by the following day.

The 80 meter long, 2670 dwt freighter Tayyar Senkaya 1 sank in the Mediterranean Sea near Antalya, Turkey.  The Tayyar Senkaya 1 had suffered water ingress in its cargo hold while en route to Singapore from Eregli with a cargo of steel.   The Tayyar Senkaya 1 sent out a distress call and were rescued by a nearby vessel.  No reports of injuries to the 11 crew.   No further details reported.

Freighters sank off Hainan Island

The 53 meter long freighter Chang Xin Shun 888 and the freighter Jin Ma 788 sank in the Gulf of Tonkin near Hainan Island, China.  Both vessels were at anchor when became overwhelmed when the tropical storm Bebinca passed over the area.   Authorities received a distress signal and dispatched rescuers to the scene.   All 12 crewmen from both vessels were later rescued.  Both vessels were loaded with cargoes of coal at the time.  Reports state the Chang Xin Shun 888 sank to the bottom, but the bridge still remains above the surface.
