On September 19, the 11 meter long, 25 gt tugboat SPS Virginia mysteriously sank on the Merrimack River off Deer Island near Amesbury, Massachusetts. The SPS Virginia had been moored unmanned off Deer Island when it was reported missing the following day. A search for the tug found it resting on its side in 20 to 30 feet of water. Salvagers were called in and were able to refloat the SPS Virginia a few days later. The SPS Virginia was brought to the surface, pumped out and towed to a basin.  Reports state there was no visible damage to the vessel and all hatches were still secured. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

On September 15, the 220 meter long bulk carrier Abyo Angelina ran aground on the Parana River near Arroyo Seco, Argentina. The Abyo Angelina was bound for China with 40,000 tons of iron ore when it got stuck in the river.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. The vessel remained aground for several days until the tug Ranquel was able to refloat the Abyo Angelina on September 19.

The 10 meter long fishing vessel Hannah Beth ran ashore on the beach near Burton Bradstock, West Dorset, England.  The vessel had run aground and was left high-and-dry with the outgoing tide. The crew have secured the vessel and requested a tug to assist in refloating the vessel on the following high tide. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
