Azov Sea Allision

Azov Sea Allision

The 108 meter long, 5466 dwt general cargo vessel Mekhanik Kovalenko allided with the 138 meter long, 5657 dwt general cargo vessel Volgo Don 213 in the Azov Sea near Taganrog, Russia. The Mekhanik Kovalenko was heaving anchor and preparing to depart when it smashed into the side of the Volgo Don 213. The Volgo Don 213 suffered  a small hole above the waterline while the Mekhanik Kovalenko had 4 meters of its bulwarks damaged. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The 183 meter long, 38529 dwt bulk carrier Turquoise Ocean ran aground on the Columbia River near Longview, Washington. The Turquoise Ocean was proceeding downriver from Longview with a cargo of potash when it suffered engine failure. The vessel ran aground on to a sandbank. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. The bulk carrier was able to restore power and proceeded to Longview for inspection.

The 19 ton tugboat Meiyu No. 18 capsized and sank in the Tsugaru Strait off Hokkaido, Japan. The Meiyu No. 18 was proceeding form Hakodate with a pontoon barge loaded with ship parts when the tug lost stability and rolled over. One crewman on board was lucky enough to find a small breathing space in the cabin. He was spent 15 hours trapped until he was later rescued by the Japanese Coast Guard. Three other crewmen  perished with two of their bodies recovered.
