Kumala Endah

Kumala Endah

The 454 gt cargo vessel Kumala Endah sank off Belawan, Indonesia in the Strait of Malacca.  The Kumala Endah was en route to Borneo with 700 tons of steel from Belawan when it struck an underwater object. The Kumala Endah suffered hull damage and water ingress.  The cargo vessel quickly sank with 5 crewmen able to swim ashore.  Another 9 crew were reported as missing.  Reports state the Kumala Endah may have struck a shipwreck which had been reported in the area where the incident occurred.

The 70 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Ølen allided with the quay in Årvika, Norway. The ferry was approaching the quay to quickly and wasn’t able to stop in time. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The Ølen sustained damage to its fenders and propeller. The ferry was pulled from service for repairs.

On March 13, the 169 meter long bulk carrier Northern Light ran aground near Manzanillo, Cuba. The Northern Light had departed from Jamaica with 25,000 tons of raw sugar en route to Klaipeda when it ran aground.  A salvage company was contracted to refloat the vessel. No further details reported.
