Collision off Hong Kong

The 85 meter long cargo vessel Ming Yang Zhou 179 collided with the 50 meter long, 900 dwt container ship Sui Dong Fang 332 near Guangzhou, China. The Sui Dong Fang 332 was loaded with 57 containers when the vessel was struck amidships by the Ming Yang Zhou 179. The Sui Dong Fang 332 was holed below the waterline and quickly sank spilling the containers into the water. The 7 crew on board were later rescued.  The Ming Yang Zhou 179 sustained bow damage above the waterline.  Authorities were able to recover 8 containers while another 20 were discovered sunk near the vessel. Reports state traffic was halted until the containers could be cleared away from the port.

The 28 meter long towboat Aries allided with a bridge over the Main-Danube Canal near Nürnberg, Germany. The Aries was en route to Linz from Erlangen when the top of the wheelhouse struck the underside of the bridge. The wheelhouse was torn away and the vessel sustained around  150,000 euros in damages. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The water police has launched an investigation into the incident.

On May 5, the 23 meter long fishing vessel Pieter Van Aris became disabled near Callantsoog, Netherlands. The fishing vessel had suffered steering problems in rough seas with waves reaching 3 meters.  KNRM lifeboats from Callantsoog and Harlingen came to the aid of the Pieter Van Aris. The lifeboats escorted the fishing vessel into shelter waters and towed it to port. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
