On February 7, the 145 meter long, 10500 dwt cargo vessel Thorco Crown became disabled off Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. The Thorco Crown was en route to Montreal when a fire broke out in the vessel’s engine room. The crew was able extinguish the blaze, but the fire damaged the main engine disabling the cargo vessel.

The crew requested assistance and the owners contacted Svitzer Salvage.  A tug was dispatched from Port Hawkesbury which arrived on scene the following day. Attempts to attach a towline failed due to weather and rough seas. The Canadian Coast Guard vessel Sir William Alexander was also on scene and monitoring the situation.

Reports state the vessel still adrift and being blown towards shore near Cape Ray. No reports of injuries to the 13 crew or pollution released.

On February 2, the 190 meter long bulk carrier Alam Manis ran aground on Cargados Carajos Shoals off the northeast end of Mauritius. The bulk carrier was headed to Pipava from Richards Bay when it ran aground. Reports state that a salvage company has been contracted to refloat the bulk carrier. No further details reported.

The 130 meter long, 8166 dwt container ship Sophia allided the lock wall in the Kiel Canal in Kiel-Holtenau, Germany. The boxship had veered off course upon entering the lock and struck the lock wall. The stern of the Sophia scraped along several meters of the wall causing a fender to be torn off along of minor damage. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The water police detained the Sophia while it conducted an investigation into the incident. Reports state the vessel was allowed to continue on its voyage later the same night and arrived in Hamburg the following day.
