On April 4, the 55 foot fishing vessel Baccalieu Endeavour capsized in Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland, Canada. The Baccalieu Endeavour had been tied up in the harbour when a strong storms struck the northeast coast of Newfoundland. During the storm the fishing vessel keeled over and capsized onto its port side.
The vessel’s owner attempted to upright the Baccalieu Endeavour with heavy equipment, but the Baccalieu Endeavour remained capsized. Divers from St. Johns were requested and will assist in bringing the vessel back to an upright position. No reports of injuries.
The 72 meter long, 3093 dwt cargo vessel Star 62 allided with several riverside homes on the Chao Phraya River in Phra Pradaeng, Bangkok, Thailand. The Star 62 had completed loading cargo of agricultural produce and was en route for Singapore when it suffered a malfunction in the steering system. The cargo vessel veered into the riverbank crashing into three homes. The homeowners were able to flee in time and there were no injuries.
Authorities arrived on scene and have launched an investigation into the incident. Reports state the vessel’s insurance will cover the cost to the damage caused to the houses. No reports of damage or pollution released from the Star 62.
The tanker-barge RTC 150 being pushed by the 38 meter long, 195 dwt towboat Meredith C. Reinauer ran aground on the Hudson River near Catskill, New York. The tanker-barge, loaded with 2.5 million gallons of gasoline, had run onto the rocks some 30 feet from the navigation channel in 6 feet of water. No reports of injuries.
Local and state authorities along with the Coast Guard arrived on scene. While no signs of pollution being released, authorities decided that the cargo of gasoline should be lightered onto another tanker-barge before any attempts to refloat the RTC 150. The lighter operations were completed later the same day. The Coast Guard then inspected the RTC 15o for damage.
With no signs of damage and no pollution released, the RTC 150 was refloated. The barge was towed to Albany where it will undergo further inspection.
Reports state the cause of the grounding may be due to the foggy weather. However, the report also states the Meredith C. Reinauer was enabled with GPS navigation.
State authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
