The 162 meter long, 17088 dwt chemical tanker Travestern allided the 161 meter long, 17083 dwt chemical tanker Havelstern off Lewisporte, Newfoundland, Canada. The Travestern had struck the anchored Havelstern while maneuvering to transfer fuel. The Travestern sustained hull damage resulting in a large hole in its superstructure. The Havelstern sustained damage to its stern above the waterline. No reports of injuries or pollution released from either vessel.

HAVELSTERN

Both vessels will be surveyed for damage. Canadian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

USS Fitzgerald

The 154 meter long,  United States Navy destroyer Fitzgerald collided with the 223 meter long, 39565 dwt container ship ACX Crystal in the early morning hours off Yokosuka, Japan.  The ACX Crystal bow had struck the starboard hull of the Fitzgerald causing significant damage including water ingress in three compartments.  The ACX Crystal sustained scrapes and dents along its bow, but damage is reported to be limited.

The captain of the Fitzgerald sustained injuries and was medivac off the vessel.  Another sailor was evacuated off the vessel by the Japan Coast Guard.  Reports state 7 sailors on the Fitzgerald were reported missing.

The Fitzgerald was able to head back to port under its own power. Escorted by the Japan Coast Guard, the Fitzgerald proceeded with limited propulsion.

DAMIA DESGAGNES

The 135 meter long, 15100 dwt asphalt/bitumen tanker Damia Desgagnes became disabled and went aground  on the St. Lawrence River near the Iroquois Lock.  The Damia Desgagnes had suffered a mechanical failure before it had run aground. The vessel sustained no damage, injuries or pollution released.

Reports state  two tugs arrived and pulled the tanker free.  Also, the crew were able to repair the mechanical issue and the Damia Desgagnes was proceeding on its voyage.
