On August 3, a 195 foot long barge caught fire on the Intracoastal Waterway in the Mississippi Sound. The barge was under tow by the 23 meter long towboat Kathryn T. Devall carrying some 2500 pounds of anhydrous ammonia and 800 gallons of diesel fuel. Authorities in Gulfport, Mississippi were alerted and firefighters were able to douse the fire.

No reports of injuries to the 4 crew on board.  The Kathryn T. Devall and the barge were not in danger of sinking, but the vessels required to be towed to shore. An environmental team was dispatched to help with cleanup.

On August 2, the 38 meter long crane barge Liesveld sank on the Eem River between Hoogland and Soest, Netherlands. The Liesveld had been moored along a quay when it flooded on its port side. An excavator on the deck fell overboard and some oil and diesel fuel was released into the water. Authorities placed booms around the Liesveld to contain any pollution. No reports of injuries.  The cause of the flooding was not reported.

The 210 meter long, 35239 dwt container ship Mercosul Santos collided with a tug on the Amazon River near Obidios, Brasil. The Mercosul Santos was headed towards Manaus when it struck a tug that was pushing nine barges. One barge was cut in two and sank to the river bottom. Another barge was crushed and remain stuck on the bulbous bow of the Mercosul Santos.

Nine of the 11 crew who were on board the barges and tug were reported as missing and feared dead. Authorities requested divers from Santarem to search for the missing crew.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
