Albatros

July 2, 2025 | Grounding

On the night of July 2, the 3 masted, 36 meter long schooner Albatros (MMSI: 211302570) ran aground on the Trave River off Travemünde, Germany. The Albatros was en route to Wismar when it grounded just off the fairway near the entrance to the Pötenitzer Wiek. The schooner requested assistance which was received by the MRCC Bremen who dispatched DGzRS lifeboats from Grömitz and Travemünde stations. The lifeboats arrived on site and found the Albatros had not sustained any hull damage resulting in water ingress. A towing line was attached and with the combine effort of the lifeboats and the schooner, the Albatros was pulled into deeper water. No reports of injuries to the 25 persons on board and no reports of pollution released.

The Albatros proceeded under its own power to a nearby quay in Travemünde. No word if the incident will be investigated by the water police or not. Reports state that weather was not a factor.

Altay

June 28, 2025 | Fire

On the morning of June 27, the 120 meter long, 8184 dwt bulk carrier Altay (IMO: 9349992) caught fire in the North Sea while berthed at Kingston-upon-Hull, England. The fire started in the cargo hold that was loaded with 3500 tons of scrap metal. Large gray plumes of smoke enveloped the bulk carrier which forced an evacuation of the crew. The local fire brigade was called out with five fire engines involved in extinguishing the blaze. Nearby residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as smoke spread through out the city. No reports of injuries.

Fire fighters stated it would take some time to completely extinguish the blaze. Witnesses reported there were still thick smoke with a smell of burning rubber in the area 5 hours after the blaze had started. Authorities have stated getting access to the area in the hold where the fire was not feasible. Thus, the fire brigade is unloading the burning scrap onto the quay where it would be extinguished. This operation went all day into early the next morning until the fire was finally extinguished. Crews remain on site just in case the fire would reignite again.

There has been no reports of the extent of damage to the Altay or to the cargo of scrap. UK authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Arminius

June 21, 2025 | Collision

On the evening of June 20, the 33 meter long passenger ship Arminius (MMSI: 211518460) collided with a cargo vessel (name not disclosed) on the Mittelland Canal in Hanover, Germany. Reports state one of the vessels was attempting to overtake the other when they collided. The Arminius proceed to a nearby quay where passengers where disembarked and met by the local fire brigade. The Arminius had 170 passengers on board at the time of the incident with 6 suffering slight injuries requiring medical care, but did not need hospital care. The cargo vessel proceeded on to the Anderter lock where it moored.

Both vessels were damaged from the incident, but no details of exact extent of damage was disclosed on either vessel. The local fire brigade reported there were no pollution released from the incident. The water police stated the Mittelland Canal was closed for several hours. The police have launched an investigation on negligent bodily harm caused by the incident.
