Kasuga Maru

The 30 ton fishing vessel Kasuga Maru capsized and sank near Amami Ōshima Island, Japan.  The crew sent out a distress call before the trawler overturned in heavy seas.  The Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessel spotted the Kasuga Maru and rescued four of the six crew.   The four crew were found on two rubber boats.   Two of four crew rescued had suffered injuries to their legs caused by shark attacks.  The two remaining crewmen were reported as missing.  No further details reported.

Kenos Athena

The 135 meter long, 7575 dwt chemical tanker Kenos Athena sank off Guandong, China.   The tanker was headed to Zhuhai from Ulsan with 7000 metric tons of sulfuric acid when it suffered water ingress.   The flooding could not be controlled and the Kenos Athena developed a severe list.   The master of the vessel requested assistance and a nearby fishing vessel responded.   All 18 crewmen on board were safely rescued and no reported injuries.   The tanker eventually listed some 40 degrees before it capsized and sank.   No signs of pollution at the surface, but there are concerns that the acid or the 140 tons of fuel oil will be released.   Authorities have place monitors around the site.

Kaptan Selim

The 87 meter long, 3100 dwt freighter Kaptan Selim went aground in the Dardanelles.   The Kaptan Selim, loaded with 3050 metric tons of cement board,  requested assistance from the Dardanelles Vessel Traffic Services Center.  They dispatched rescue boats from the Turkish Coast Guard and a fast rescue tug to the scene.  Salvage tugs arrived later and were able to refloat the Kaptan Selim later the same day.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The Kaptan Selim was en route to Canakkale from Novorossiysk.
