Nicole Burmester

April 2, 2020 | Grounding

The 85 meter long self-propelled tanker-barge Nicole Burmester ran aground on the Western Scheldt near Terneuzen, Netherlands. The tanker had departed from Antwerp when it mistook a buoy for a harbor light and stranded on a submerged breakwater. The crew requested assistance with multiple tugs responding. The tugs were able to pull the Nicole Burmester free. The tugs then escorted the tanker to the port of Terneuzen. There it berthed and authorities had divers inspect the hull for damage. No reports of injuries. The incident is under investigation.

Nova

February 29, 2020 | Pollution, Sank

On February 27, the 38 foot tugboat Nova sank on the Columbia River near Umatilla, Oregon. The Nova had broken from its mooring by high winds and drifted nearly a mile before it sank just upriver of the McNary Dam. Authorities were alerted and dispatched a response team to the scene.

State and Federal authorities found where the Nova had sunk. Divers inspected the wreck and found a 1 meter gash in the hull. Fuel vents were closed, but the Nova had already released oil pollution into the water. A light sheen was visible above the sunken tug. Booms and absorbent pads were used to contain the pollution.

Reports state a barge and crane was dispatched to lift the tug from the river bottom. The Nova was later recovered a few days later and taken to Vancouver. No reports of injuries as no one was on board the Nova at the time of the incident.

Nevado 35

January 5, 2020 | Grounding

On December 25, 2019, the 90 meter long, 3700 dwt dry cargo vessel Nevado 35 ran aground off Tekirdağ, Turkey. The Nevado 35 had suffered rudder failure and veered toward the shoreline before running aground just 35 meters off the coast. The cargo vessel remained aground for 2 days after several failed attempts to refloat itself. The vessel then requested help with a tug dispatched to the scene. Weather prevented the Nevado 35 to be pulled free. For another week, the Nevado 35 remained stuck off the shoreline. A lighter vessel was requested and some 3000 tons of sunflower meal was offloaded from the Nevado 35. By January 5, the Nevado 35 had been refloated and moored off Tekirdağ to be surveyed. No reports of injuries to the 11 crew on board.
