On the morning of May 23, the 68 meter long, 2218 dwt cargo vessel Torvang (IMO: 6902808) capsized on the Kornstadfjorden while berthed at a quay in Averøy, Norway. The Torvang had finished loading a cargo of gravel when it lost stability and capsized onto its port hull. The five crew onboard were able to abandon ship with 3 crew members walking onto the quay. The other 2 crew members had to jump into the sea and swim ashore.  No reports of injuries.

Authorities were alerted of the incident with the local fire brigade aided by the NSSR placed booms around the Torvang to contain any oil pollution released from the vessel. The police and Norwegian Maritime Authority have launched an investigation into the incident. No details from the initial investigation has been released, but there is some assumptions the imbalanced was caused by the cargo shifting after loading was completed. Reports state a sludge suction has been requested to help dewater the vessel. After dewatering, the assumption the Torvang will right itself.

 

TB Toranes

On March 29, the 18 meter long tugboat TB Toranes (IMO: 257103600) became disabled in the North Sea off Årabrotholmane, Norway.  The TB Toranes was towing a barge when it suffered engine problems and had to drop anchor off Årabrotholmane. The tug requested assistance with the NSSR dispatching the lifeboats Horn Rescue (MMSI: 257641000) and RC Bergesen (MMSI: 257965590).  The Horn Rescue took the TB Toranes under tow and proceeded to Haugesund.  The RC Bergesen aided by the patrol boat KV Tor (IMO: 9353369) took the barge under tow to Haugesund.  There were no reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

Thor

On the morning of February 18, the 22 meter long, 163 gt towboat Thor (IMO: 8842246) caught fire on the Delaware River near Pea Patch Island, Pennsylvania. The Thor was pushing two barges between Delaware City and Old New Castle when a fire broke out in the engine room.  The crew was able to escape the blaze, but the fire had disabled the steering and the towboat went adrift. The crew sent out a distress call and were rescued by a nearby vessel. No reports of injuries.

The United States Coast Guard along with local authorities dispatched fire fighting vessels to the scene. Reports states the fire was extinguished and the Thor was taken under tow by the tug Wye River (IMO: 9512379).  The incident is under investigation.
