Zahro Express

The ferry Zahro Express exploded and caught fire off Muara Angke, Indonesia. The Zahro Express had departed from the port of Kali Adem, Muara Angke with 234 passengers bound for Tidung Island. After 15 minutes leaving port, the ferry suffered an explosion and resulting fire in the engine room.  Dense smoke poured out of the compartment causing panic among the passengers. Passengers rushed forward to escape the smoke and flames. The crew was unable to control the blaze and sent out a distress call.

Some jumped overboard while others waited until rescue boats arrived on scene. Reports state some 194 persons were rescued. The Coast Guard was able to recover some 23 bodies of those who perished. An additional 17 persons were still reported as missing. 

The fire consumed the superstructure of the Zahro Express. Authorities were eventually able to douse the flames, but only the lower hull remained. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

Zhenjiang Collision

Long Hao 1

On October 22, the 190 meter long cargo vessel Xin Zhou 18 collided with the 69 meter long cargo vessel Long Hao 1 on the Yangtze River near Zhenjiang, China. The Xin Zhou 18 was proceeding to Caofeidan from Zhenjiang in ballast when it struck the Long Hao 1 which was loaded with 2700 tons of sand. The Long Hao 1 capsized and rolled over after the collision. Reports state 3 crew of the Long Hao 1 were later rescued by a nearby fishing vessel.  Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Salvage of the Long Hao 1 was reported to have started.

 

Zhenpeng

The 80 meter long tanker Zhenpeng ran aground on the Pearl River near Guangzhou, China. The Zhenpeng, loaded with 2290 tons of gasoline, was struck by the passing 99 meter long cargo vessel Yanzhan 58. The tanker sustained hull damage and water ingress in the engine room.  The Yanzhan 58 was towed to shallow water where it ran aground to avoid sinking. All 15 crew on the Zhenpeng were rescued. No reports of injuries. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
