The 138 meter long, 12667 dwt freighter Fredensborg caught fire while docked at the port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.  The vessel had arrived from Thailand with a cargo of hardware when a fire was discovered in the hold.  The crew and local firefighters used carbon dioxide were able to extinguish the blaze.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The amount of damage to the vessel was not yet reported until an official investigation can be completed.

The 300 meter long, 88700 dwt container ship Maersk Kampala caught fire while transiting the Suez Canal.  The Maersk Kampala departed from Jeddah with some 4,000 containers when two containers on the bottom of the stack on the fore deck caught fire.  The crew attempted to fight the blaze, but were unable to extinguish it before it spread to other containers on deck.  Several tugboats with fire-fighting capabilities arrived and assisted in fighting the blaze.  The tugs were able to contain the fire to just six containers the following day.   Fire-fighting teams were able to eventually to douse the fire and put out any remaining hot spots.  No reports of injuries.  Reports state the vessel was adrift and may have suffered some damage beyond the containers on deck.

STEAMER

The 81 meter long, 2560 dwt freighter Steamer caught fire while at anchor in the Black Sea off Burgas, Bulgaria.   The Steamer was waiting to take on a cargo of scrap when a fire broke out in the crew quarters.   The crew requested assistance with two patrols dispatched to the scene.  One vessel began to douse the fire while the other, with the assistance of a Coast Guard cutter, safely evacutated the crew.  No reports of injuries.  Reports state the fire may have been caused by an electrical short.  No details on damage or if fire was extinguished.
