The 182 meter long,  44999 dwt Carla Maersk collided with the 190 meter long, 57001 dwt bulk carrier Conti Peridot in the Houston Ship Channel near Morgan’s Point, Texas. The Carla Maersk was carrying 25,600 mt of methyl tert-butyl ether from Venezuela when it struck by the Conti Peridot carrying a cargo of steel from China.  The Carla Maersk sustained damage to three cargo tanks along its port side.  Reports state an unknown quantity of MTBE pollution was released from the tanker.  The Coast Guard responded and shut the channel between light 86 to Morgan’s Point. No reports of injuries. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Reports state conditions in the area was foggy and light rain.

The 138 meter long  bulk carrier Finesse became disabled off Le Chalet Saint-Paulois, France. The Finesse was at anchor for several days with a cargo of sugar for Daressalam when it had to depart due to the arrival of stormy weather.  As the bulk carrier manoevered away, it suffered a mechanical breakdown.  Two tugs were dispatched and took the Finesse under tow.  The vessels proceeded to away from the anchorage and will proceed into port when conditions improve.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 728 foot long bulk carrier Miyama ran aground on the Columbia River near Welch Island, Oregon. The Miyama had departed from Longview bound for Korea when it lost power and drfited aground. The Coast Guard was contacted who dispatched a helicopter from Astoria.  No sign of damage or pollution was reported. The Miyama was later refloated a few hours later.
