On August 1, the 182 meter long, 44,183 dwt bulk carrier Benita sank off Mauritius while being towed to India to be scrapped. The Benita had run aground on June 17 when a brawl broke out amongst the crew and the vessel ran onto the rocky shore of Mauritius. Salvagers were able to debunker and refloat the Benita, but it was found the vessel was too damaged and was to be demolished. Reports stated the Benita developed a list while under tow and sank by the stern.  No reports of injuries.  The Benita now rests at a depth of 4,400 meters.
