The 90 meter long cement carrier Cemluna went aground outside the port of Aabenraa, Denmark. The Cemluna had departed from Aalborg when the crew made a navigation error causing the cargo vessel to run aground. No reports of injuries. Divers were requested to make a survey of the vessel. No reports of pollution released.
The 45 foot long fishing vesselDan Israel sank after being struck by a cargo vessel off El Fraile Island in Manila Bay, Philippines. The wooden hull fishing vessel quickly broke-up and sank. The crew of the Dan Israel were thrown into the water. Twelve crew were able either to swim ashore or were rescued from the water. Many suffered from dehydration and exhaustion. One crewman perished and another 10 men were still reported missing. The survivors were unable to identify the cargo ship that struck. The Coast Guard has launched a search and rescue operation for the missing men. Authorities are looking for a large blue container ship which was in the area. Reports state both vessels had lights and radar which should have prevented the collision.
The 60 meter long, 965 dwt cargo ship Fosenbulk became disabled off Flatanger, Norway after suffering a power outage. The vessel’s main engine had failed while in heavy seas and high winds. The crew immediately dropped anchor to keep the vessel from being blown on to shallows. The crew alerted authorities as they feared the anchor chain could break. A lifeboat was dispatched to the scene along with a Sea King helicopter. The helicopter was able to airlift the 4 crewmen to safety.
The Coast Guard vessel Harstad arrived later and was able to connect a towline to the Fosenbulk. The vessels proceeded to Namsos. No reports of injuries. The Fosenbulk was loaded with foundry sand bound for Rissa.
