The 85 meter long self-propelled barge Christiane went aground on the River Main near Dettelbach, Germany.   The Christiane had suffered engine failure and become disabled just after passing through the lock at Dettelbach.   A few hours later, another self-propelled barge Poseidon along with the tug Domarin 15 were able to pull the Christiane free.   The disabled Christiane was taken under tow by the Domarin 15 to Kitzingen where it will be surveyed.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.  The Christiane was loaded with 970 tons of steel coils bound from Wipfeld Mannheim.

The 121 meter long, 7085 dwt freighter Asian Express sank in the Indian Ocean near the Lakshadweep Islands while proceeding from Bin Qasim, Pakistan to Male.   The Asian Express was loaded with a cargo of sand and cement when it was disabled after an engine breakdown.  The vessel rolled badly as conditions became rough.  The crew attempted repairs, but the vessel’s hull crack midships.  The vessel suffered water ingress and quickly began to list and sink.   The crew of 22 evacuated to the vessel’s lifeboats before the Asian Express sank.   The crew were later rescued by the the Indian Coast Guard vessel Varuna.

The 367 meter long, 116100 dwt container ship Mathilde Maersk suffered a fire in the Suez Canal.  The fire started in the vessel’s engine room and was quickly extinguished by the crew.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.   The fire disabled the container ship and a tug took the Mathilde Maersk under tow to the Great Bitter Lake.  There the vessel is at anchorage while the crew make repairs.   The Mathilde Maersk was headed to Algeciras, Spain from Malaysia.   The cause of the fire was not reported.
