Alaskan Knight

The 43 meter long fishing vessel Alaskan Knight became disabled off Mary Island near Ketchikan, Alaska.   The Alaskan Knight had lost its propeller and gone adrift.  The crew shot a flare which was spotted by the fishing vessel Nancy Marie.  The Nancy Marie took the Alaskan Knight under tow back to Ketchikan.  The Coast Guard also dispatched a helicopter to the scene to investigate the report of the flare.   When the Alaskan Knight arrived in Ketchikan, the Coast Guard boarded the vessel and conducted an investigation.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.

Vessel Burned After Aground

The 58 foot fishing vessel Legend went aground at Bostwick Point south of Ketchikan, Alaska.   Soon after, the fishing vessel caught fire.  However, the 5 crew on board were rescued by the nearby vessel Western Roamer.   The Legend’s crew was transferred to another fishing vessel and were transported back to Ketchikan.   The Legend was loaded with 700 gallons of diesel fuel along with 2,000 pounds of salmon.   The fire consumed the vessel leaving only a burned out hull.   Reports state there is some oil pollution around the hull.   The Coast Guard is assisting the owner in salvage operations.    They are also conducting an investigation into the grounding.   No reports of injuries.

Aleutian Ballad Strikes Rock

The 36-meter long former fishing vessel Aleutian Ballad struck a rock while off Pennock Island.   The Aleutian Ballad was on a wildlife tour with 125 passengers and 6 crewmen when it struck bottom.  The vessel contacted the Coast Guard which deployed its 25-foot vessel out of Ketchikan to escort the Aleutian Ballad back to port.   Both vessels reached port without issue and all passengers were safely offloaded.   The Coast Guard conducted an investigation and inspection of the Aleutian Ballad.  The vessel will complete repairs at the Ketchikan shipyard.   No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The Aleutian Ballad is best known for fishing for crab in the Bering Sea when it was struck by a 60-foot rogue wave and capsized.   Afterwards, the Aleutian Ballad was converted to give tours in waters near Ketchikan, Alaska.
