St. John

The ro-ro ferry St. John became disabled on the Mississippi River while approaching the pier at Chalmette, Louisiana.  The ferry had difficulty maintaining power while crossing the Mississippi with the engine stopping several times.  As the ferry approached the dock, it’s engines failed allowing the ferry to strike a barge moored at the dock.  No reports of injuries, but several passengers were shaken up by the incident.   The St. John was pulled from service while the Coast Guard investigates the incident.

Altro Donna

Altro Donna

The towboat Altro Donna sank on the Mississippi River at Marrero, Louisiana.   The Altro Donna was proceeding with eight empty containers when it struck a piling while attempting to dock at Marrero.  The three crew on board were able to escape as the vessel filled with water and sank.  No reports of injuries.   The Altro Donna had 11,500 gallons of diesel fuel when it sank.   Authorities have stated there was a sheen over the sunken towboat.  The  Coast Guard is conducting an investigation into the incident.
