Rena Aground

Rena Aground

The 236 meter long, 47230 dwt container ship Rena went aground on the Astrolabe Reef north of Motiti Island near the Tauranga Harbor, New Zealand.   The freighter has suffered significant damage with two cargo holds flooded and the vessel has developed a 12 degree list.  Pumps are in use to keep the water out of the holds.  None of the 25 crew on board were injured.  The heavy fuel oil tanks were undamaged, but the fuel is being transferred from the port to starboard side as a preventive measure.   Some hydraulic oil has been released.   Authorities have deployed a team of trained pollution control responders to the scene.

Update 1

Reports state the Rena had been detained in port recently.  In August, the Rena was in Freemantle, Australia and was detained because of defective hatchway covers and improper cargo storage.

Straitsman Disabled

Straitsman Disabled

The 125 meter long, 4168 dwt passenger ship Straitsman became disabled in the Marlborough Sounds with 50 passengers on board.  The Straitsman had suffered mechanical failure when its fuel pump failed.   The vessel remained at anchor for two hours until repairs could be completed by the crew.   The passenger ship continued on to Wellington.    No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

Maersk Dabou Allides with Wharf

Maersk Dabou Allides with Wharf

The 41,359 gt boxship Maersk Dabou allided with the wharf at Port Chalmers, New Zealand when its engines failed while it manoeuvre  to berth and the vessel struck the corner of the wharf.   The vessel starboard side was damage with a hole in hull the size of 5 meters by 2 meters above the waterline.   The Maersk Dabou had 4,132 containers which will remain on board until repairs can be made.   No reports of injuries.
