The freighter Ryu-Jin was reported lost off Taitung, Taiwan.  The vessel had become disabled after an engine failure when rough seas caused part of the hull to split open.  The vessel suffered severe ingress and listed over.   The vessel sent out distress call which was received by authorities.  A helicopter was dispatched to the scene and was able to rescue seven crew from the Ryu-Jin.  One report states the master of the Ryu-Jin was reported to have been lost overboard.   No detailed background information on the Ryu-Jin has been located.  The vessel is flagged as Cambodian, but no other details are available.

Collision off Penghu

Collision off Penghu

The 232 meter long, 43093 dwt freighter Taroko collided with the 997 ton freighter Te Hsing off Penghu Islands, Taiwan.  The Te Hsing was heading to Kinmen Island from Kaohsiung when it was struck by the Taroko during the night.  Of the 13 men on board the Te Hsing, two men were killed with another crewman and the master reported missing.  The condition of the Te Hsing was not reported.  No one on the Taroko was injured in the collision.   The Taroko was headed for Taichung, Taiwan from Hong Kong.   The cause of the collision is under investigation.

Jui Hsing Aground

Jui Hsing Aground

The 155 meter long, 18955 dwt freighter Jui Hsing went aground off Keelung, Taiwan while sailing through Typhoon Nalgae.   The Jui Hsing had left Keelung bound for China when it went it went aground on the rocks.   The storm pounded the vessel and the freighter broke-in-two sending the 21 crew into the water.   The authorities dispatched vessels and a helicopter to the scene.  Rescuers were able to save 11 men.   Reports state four men perished while another six were still listed as missing.   Authorities are also attempting to contain the 1 kilometer long oil slick resulting from the  200 tons of diesel and 80 tons of heavy fuel on board the freighter.
