Preliminary reports state the Elixir struck the MT Tank which broke-in-two.  Divers were requested to inspect the sunken portion to ensure no-one was left trapped inside (as a cook survived in an air pocket for two days  after a tugboat capsizing and sinking off Nigeria).

On October 19, the 180 meter long, 46874 dwt tanker Elixir collided with the 80 meter long, 4500 dwt tanker Good Success off Bonga FPSO, Nigeria. Both tankers were proceeding in low visibility when the Elixir struck the Good Success.  The Good Success quickly sank with 12 crew on board.  Three of the crew were later rescued, but the remaining remain missing or lost.  The details of the collision have not yet been reported, but authorities have stated that a last minute change of course caused the collision.  The tanker Elixir has been detained by authorities until the investigation is completed.

ALIA

The 183 meter long, 35,669 dwt tanker Alia caught fire in the North Sea off Hvide Sande, Denmark. The fire started after an explosion in the vessel’s engine room.  The crew evacuated the compartment and  turned on the tanker’s fire suppression system.  The system released CO2 into the engine room extinguishing the fire, but the tanker had sustained damage and was adrift.  Two nearby fishing vessels came to the Alia’s aid and poured water onto the hull of the tanker to keep it cool.  No reports of injuries. The Alia was en route to Malta from Gothenburg.
