Vera

Vera

The 114 meter long, 2850 dwt freighter Vera sank in the Black Sea off Eregli, Turkey.  The Vera had decided to drop anchor a mile off the shore off Eregli to shelter from the severe weather.   The Vera quickly began to take on water after the cargo shifted.   A distress call was sent out.  The Turkish Coast Guard dispatched a vessel along with tugs to the scene.  Reports state that 3 out of the 12 crew on board were rescued.   The remaining crew were reported as missing.   The vessel was en route to Izmir with a cargo of scrap.

Rona

Rona

The 86 meter long, 2669 dwt freighter Rona went aground near Akpinar, Turkey.   The vessel had entered the Black Sea when the master decided to anchor off Kilyos due to bad weather.  However, the high winds caused the anchor to drag and the vessel drifted aground.  The master of the vessel initially refused assistance, but as the storm worsen the ship owners requested assistance and the Turkish Coast Guard.  They dispatched two rescue boats along with a tug to the scene.    The Rona was en route to Varna from Tuzla.

Update:  All crew was safely removed from the vessel on Jan28, 2011.   No reports of injuries.

Kayan 1

Kayan 1

The 86 meter long, 5644 dwt freighter Kayan 1 went aground in the Marmara Sea to avoid sinking after an allision.   The Kayan 1  allided with the 98 meter long, 4750 dwt freighter Slochterdiep and the 94 meter long, 3844 dwt freighter Adria Blu off Instanbul.   The Slochterdiep and Adria Blu suffered minor damage, but the Kayan 1’s hull was holed near the engine room.   The Kayan 1 suffered water ingress and developed a severe list to starboard.   Authorities dispatched a salvage tug to assist.   The tug took the Kayan 1 under tow to the shallows where the freighter went aground.   The crew of 13 were evacuated.     A salvage team was able to patch the hole and pumped out the water.   The crew returned to the vessel the next day.   Reports state the vessel was taken to Istanbul.   No reports of injuries.
