Josille II

Josille II

The 96 gt wooden passenger and general cargo vessel Josille II sank off Pagawanin Island, Palawan, Philippines.   The vessel had departed from Liminancong bound for El Nido with 47 passengers and 12 crew on board.   Conditions in the area were bad as a storm was approaching from the southwest.  The Philippine Coast Guard had issued gale warnings which were ignored by the master of the Josille II.  Three hours later the master of the Josille II wished he had stayed in port.   The storm had intensified creating large waves which battered the seams of the vessel until they leaked.   Quickly the vessel flooded until it sank sending all on board into the water.  When reports of the sinking reach the authorities, they launched a search and rescue operation.  Ships from the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy and local fishermen were able rescue 54 people from the water.   Unfortunately, another five people had drown and their bodies were later recovered.
