The 200 meter long, 29,277 dwt container ship Kamala caught fire in the East China Sea between Kuchinoshima Island, Japan and Chedju do, Korea. The fire erupted in the cargo hold while the vessel was en route from Surabaya to Ulsan. The vessel requested assistance with the Japanese Coast Guard responding.  Reports state the boxship was carrying 796 containers and the crew  was unable to extinguish the blaze. No injuries to the 23 crew on board.

Typhoon winds send bulk carrier Xin Mao aground

The 160 meter long, 24,148 dwt bulk carrier Xin Mao ran aground off Taizhou, China. The bulk carrier was at anchor when strong winds from the approaching typhoon caused its anchors to drag. The Xin Mao attempted to heave its anchor and maneover away from shore when it suffered a mechanical fault.  The crew sent out a distress call asking to be evacuated off the vessel.  Reports state all 14 crew were later rescued by authorities from Taizhou.  No reports of injuries.

The 35 foot long fishing vessel Sea Pup ran aground on a jetty off Newport, Oregon. The fishing vessel was coming into the port when it struck the jetty. The master of the vessel  was able to abandon ship and climb up onto the jetty to safety.  The Coast Guard responded with a helicopter and motor lifeboat.  No reports of injuries. Reports state some 80 gallons of diesel fuel was released into the water before the vessel broke up on the jetty.  The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.
