On March 21, the 85 meter long cargo vessel LCT Marc Jason III capsized and sank off  the shore of Malabuyoc, Cebu, Philippines. The LCT Marc Jason III was headed to Bantayan Island from Tampi, Amlan with a cargo of sand. As the vessel was off Malabuyoc, it began to list.  The LCT Marc Jason III berthed at Malabuyoc where it continued to list forcing all 17 crew abandoned ship.  No reports of injuries.

The following day, the LCT Marc  Jason III capsized completely and sank just 50 meters from the shore. No reports of pollution released, but local authorities are concern that pollution may be released if the vessel isn’t salvaged quickly.

The 117 meter long, 6678 dwt tanker Xing Long Zhou 569 caught fire after suffering an explosion off Shandong, China. The crew of the Xing Long Zhou 569 requested assistance as the explosion had disabled the vessel and fire quickly engulfed the vessel.

Multiple rescue vessels along with a helicopter were dispatched to the scene. The helicopter rescued 13 of the 16 crew on board. Three crew were listed as missing and presumed perished in the explosion.

Salvage vessels arrived later and were able to bring the blaze under control. The Xing Long Zhou 569 was taken under tow to Shidao. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 63 foot long fishing vessel Truline suffered damage off San Clemente Island, California. The vessel with 20 passengers and five crew had struck a submerged object and sustained hull damage. The Truline had suffered water ingress and the vessel’s pumps were unable to control the flooding.

The vessel sent out distress call with the Coast Guard responding. A Jayhawk helicopter, a 45-foot response boat and the 87 foot cutter Sockeye were dispatched to the scene. The vessels arrived on scene and assisted in evacuating the passengers off the Truline. No reports of injuries.

The Coast Guard assisted in dewatering the fishing vessel and escorted the Truline back to Newport Beach. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident. No reports of pollution released.
