Collision In Hainan Strait

Jian Feng Ling

On April 5, the 123 meter long, 2403 dwt ro-ro passengers ferry Jian Feng Ling collided with the 185 meter long, 44593 dwt container ship Hong Yang in the Hainan Strait near Haikou, China. The Hong Yang struck the starboard hull of the Jian Feng Ling causing considerable damage. The ferry had damage on both the car and passenger decks with several passengers injured and multiple vehicles damaged. The Hong Yang sustained damage to its bow, but did not have any injuries on board. Reports state the Hong Yang was en route to Qinzhou while the Jian Feng Ling was headed for Haikou.

On April 6, the 97 meter long cargo vessel Da Pu Jiang sank off Zhejiang Province, China. The cargo vessel was headed for Wufu from Caofeidian when it sank in waters near Ningbo, China.

Authorities launched a search and rescue operation.  A rescue vessel and arrived to find 10 of the 13 crew on board had been able to abandoned ship into the vessel’s life raft. A helicopter located two more crew men in the water and hoisted them to safety. Rescuers later discovered the body of the remaining crewman in the water.

The cause of the sinking has not been disclosed.

The 225 meter long, 74269 dwt bulk carrier Vitaspirit allided with the shoreline on the Bosphorus under the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge near Istanbul, Turkey. The Vitaspirit had become disabled after its rudder became stuck.  Unable to steer, the bulk carrier ran against the shoreline striking the 18th century Hekimbaşı Salih Efendi mansion. The mansion was nearly destroyed, but there were no reports of injuries or pollution released from the Vitaspirit.

Traffic was halted on the Bosphorus until the Vitaspirit could be towed away. Reports state there was a pilot on board and the vessel had suffered a mechanical malfunction with the rudder.
