Volgo Don 147

On October 2, the 138 meter long, 5150 dwt cargo vessel Volgo Don 147 collided with the 140 meter long, 7441 dwt tanker Gloria on the Don River near Bagaevskaya, Russia.  The Volgo Don 147 was headed for the Azov Sea with a cargo of barley when it struck head-on with the Gloria which was proceeding upstream in ballast. Both vessels sustained significant bow damage including hull breaches and water ingress on the Volgo Don 147.  No reports of injuries. Both vessels drop anchor nearby to allow authorities to conduct an investigation.  Reports state both vessels were not in danger of sinking. Tugs were dispatched to take the vessels under tow.

On October 2, the 70 meter long cargo vessel Ying Hai capsized and sank in the Taiwan Strait south of the Penghu Islands, Taiwan.  The Ying Hai was en route to Busan, South Korea from Kaohsiung when a cargo of containers.  During the voyage in heavy seas several containers shifted on the Ying Hai.  Several containers fell overboard and the cargo vessel developed a list. The crew alerted authorities and abandoned ship.  Helicopters and search and rescue vessels were dispatched to the scene. Rescue boats attempted to take the Ying Hai under tow, but rough conditions made it impossible.  All 9 crew were evacuated by helicopters off the Ying Hai as the list continued to increase.  No reports of injuries.

The next day the Ying Hai continued to list until it rolled over on its side.  The cargo vessel quickly flooded and sank.

The 29 meter long, 130 dwt fishing vessel Frosti caught fire off Straumnes, Iceland. The fire started in the trawler’s engine room and quickly contained by the crew.  However, dense smoke had spread through out the Frosti except the bridge.  The vessel sent out a distress call with two Iceland Coast Guard helicopters and patrol boats to the scene.  One helicopter airlifted one crew person off the Frosti who required treatment for smoke inhalation.  The other helicopter arrived and lowered five firefighters to the Frosti.  The patrol boat Tyr arrived and took the Frosit under tow back to Hafnarfjordur.  No reports of pollution released.
