GIS Patriot

On August 22, the 34 meter long, 85 gt cargo vessel GIS Patriot (MMSI 367191040) capsized in the Tortuga Canal between Tortuga Island and Port-de-Paix, Haiti. The GIS Patriot was loaded with a cargo of several tons of rice along with 6 passengers when it rolled over. All 6 passengers and 10 crew were suddenly thrown into the sea. Local residents of Tortuga Island came to their aid and rescued all 16 people using small boats and canoes. Reports stated that all cargo was lost, but did not state if any of the 16 survivors had been injured during the incident. While Haitian maritime authorities have pledged up safety measures, there was no governmental agencies present in the area during the incident. News reports did not state if the GIS Patriot would be salvaged.
