On October 24, the 18 meter long fishing vessel Johannes Dirk – DK17  became disabled off Lauwersoog, Netherlands. The trawler had gotten its propeller fouled by a fishing net and went adrift. The crew requested assistance with the nearby fishing vessel Vier Gebroeder arriving on scene. The Vier Gebroeder began to tow the Johannes Dirk through the Wesgat when the KNRM lifeboat arrived and took over the tow. The lifeboat safely towed the Johannes Dirk to Lauwersoog. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

On October 20, the 26 meter long wooden fishing vessel Jorge Seif Junior capsized and sank off Imbituba, Brazil. The trawler with 24 crew on board had lost stability while fishing in bad weather with strong winds and waves reaching 5 meters high. Nearby vessels were alerted by the trawler’s EPIRB and responded to the distress call. The 153 meter long cargo vessel BBC Citrine was first to be on scene and rescued 18 crew from the water. The BBC Citrine proceeded to head for Itaguai while other vessels searched for the remaining 6 crew of the Jorge Seif Junior. Reports state that one crew man rescued from the water died from injuries before reaching Itaguai.

Jin Gwo Dee Haw No. 1

The fishing vessel Jin Gwo Dee Haw No. 1 caught fire while berthed in the harbour of Port Louis, Mauritius. The fire started during the early morning hours and quickly grew to engulf the vessel’s superstructure. No reports of injuries, but authorities had the fishing vessel towed out of the harbour. The National Coast Guard did not report the cause of the fire. An investigation has been launched by local authorities.
