Collision at Hamburg

Collision at Hamburg

The 168 meter long container ship Charlotta collided with the 140 meter long, 11000 dwt container ship Hanse Confidence while docking at Hamburg, Germany.  The Charlotta suffered a technical fault before it rammed the stem of the Hanse Confidence.   The Hanse Confidence suffered extensive damage as the hull was punctured allowing water ingress into the generator and engine rooms.   The Hanse Confidence began to heel and looked as the vessel was going to sink.   However, the emergency services responded quickly.   Pumps were placed on board while containers were unloaded from the deck.   Both operations allowed the Hanse Confidence to sit higher in the water.   When they completed, the hull damage was lifted 50 inches above the waterline.  No reports of injuries.   The Hanse Confidence was towed to Norderwerft Reiherstieg.    The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.

The self-propelled barge Aargau went aground on the Rhine River near Trechtingshausen, Germany.   The Aargau was proceeding up the Rhine from Ghent bound for Basel with 1600 tons of wheat.   The Aargau suffered damage with water ingress resulting in the second engine room flooding.   Initial reports state the cause of the accident was the vessel was overloaded for the current low water levels in this section of the Rhine.  Divers were brought in to help seal the leak.   Authorities have detained the Aargau until some of its cargo can be lightened to reduce the risk the vessel will strike bottom again.  No reports of injuries.
