The 167 meter long, 26758 dwt bulk freighter Rising Eagle became disabled in the Dadanelles near Intepe, Turkey. The Rising Eagle had suffered a mechanical failure requiring the freighter to drop anchor. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. The Rising Eagle was en route to Bandirma, Turkey from Aqaba, Jordan.
The LST-325 went aground on the Cumberland River near the Lake Barkely Lock, Kentucky. The former World War II tank landing craft was headed to its home port of Evensville, Indiana from Nashville, Tennesee with 42 crew on board when it travelled outside the navigation channel going aground. No reports of injuries or damage reported. The Coast Guard arrived on scene and will evaluate the refloating of the vessel. The LST-325 was deployed on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion at Normandy, France.
The ferry Lamma IV collided with the 28 meter long catamaran ferry Sea Smooth off Lamma Island, Hong Kong, China. The Lamma IV had been chartered by Hong Kong Electric to take 121 staff and their family for an outing to see a fireworks display. Ten minutes into the voyage, the Sea Smooth slammed into the side near the stern of the Lamma IV. The Lamma IV quickly sank by the stern causing a steep list. As the vessel went nearly 90 degrees into the air, passengers fell overboard into the water. Luckily many vessels arrived on scene and were able to pull over 100 people out of the water. The Sea Smooth suffered damage to its port bow. Reports state over 30 were killed and another 100 people were injured. Reports state the Sea Smooth left the scene of the collision and did not participate in the rescue.
