The 59 foot long fishing vessel Western Venture caught fire and sank in the Bering Sea off Adak, Alaska.  The fire started in the vessel’s bow and quickly consumed the entire vessel.  The five crew on board activated the vessel’s EPIRB before escaping into the life raft.  The nearby fishing vessel Aleutian Beauty was first on scene and rescued all five crewmen.  No injuries were reported.  The Coast Guard reported that an oil sheen was reported where the Western Venture sank. The Western Venture had some 2000 gallons of diesel and other oil on board at the time.

Polaris

POLARIS

The 88 meter long, 2904 dwt freighter Polaris collided with the oil barge on the Volga-Baltic Seaway on the Kovzha River, Russia.  The Polaris was maneuvering pass the anchored barge Hanka when freighter struck the bow of the Hanka.  The barge suffered  a small hole above the waterline while the Polaris was undamaged.  The Polaris proceeded to a nearby anchorage while authorities investigate into the incident.  No reports of injuries and no pollution was released.  The Hanka was loaded with 4130 tons of gasoline at the time. The Polaris was en route from St. Petersburg to Astrakhan.
