The 118 meter long, 7802 dwt cargo vessel Thorco Hilde became disabled while entering Holtenau Locks of the Kiel Canal. The Thorco Hilde was headed from Gdansk when it suffered engine failure entering the locks. The pilot alerted the lock personnel who were able secure the cargo vessel before it struck the lock gate. The crew was able to restart the engine and proceeded out the lock a short time later. Authorities detained the Thorco Hilde for a few hours while doing an investigation into the incident. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 90 meter long, 4200 dwt cargo vessel Fluvius Tamar sank in the North Sea off the coast of Ramsgate, England. The Fluvius Tamar was en route from Eemshaven, Netherlands with 3,800 tonnes of magnesium oxide bound for Pasajes, Spain. As the vessel passed some 30 miles off the coast, the Fluvius Tamar ran into difficulty. The cargo vessel was in strong northwesterly gale when it began to take on water. The vessel sent out a distress call that it was flooding rapidly and needed assistance.

On January  10, the  367 meter long, 127015 dwt container ship Gustav Maersk ran aground in the Messina Strait near Torre Cavallo, Italy. The Gustav Maersk en route to Gioia Tauro from Rijeka entered the Messia Strait.  While it maneuvered to bring on a pilot, the boxship ran aground just off the shoreline.

The vessel requested assistance with two tugs responding.  The tugs were able to refloat the Gustav Maersk and the vessels proceeded to Gioia Tauro.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
