Evening Star

Evening Star

The 50 foot fishing vessel Evening Star capsized and sank in the Slocum Arm near Sitka, Alaska.  The crew were pulling in a load of salmon nets when it lost stability before sinking in 300 feet of water .  All five crewmen on board were able to escape and were quickly rescued by the nearby fishing vessel Chickamene.  No reports of injuries.   Authorities spotted an oil sheen on the surface causing the closure of the nearby salmon fishery.   The Evening Star had some 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel aboard when it sank.  The Coast Guard is coordinating with the vessel’s owners with the pollution and salvage if possible.
